The Adventures of Snoop and the Professor. Chapter 2

Chapter 2. Snoop and the Professor: Discovering an Alligator in Florida

I woke up this morning in Casa Staten Tallahassee in Florida. Mom went to work and the Professor took me on a walk around my new neighborhood. He said we needed to take a walk before it becomes too hot today. He explained to me that the entire area used to be a plantation and that the developers have tried to keep the area as natural as possible. I had no idea about what he was talking. We went on the walking/jogging path through a large and dense area of trees covered with Spanish moss and thick undergrowth around lots of creeks and small ponds and lakes. The Professor said some of them were retention or drainage ponds. Like some of his students, I paid no attention. I was in heaven. My beagle nose was on overtime smelling all the new Florida smells or odors. We passed other people walking and, of course, they made over me because I am so handsome. I immediately backed away from the men but let the women pet me. I like women better. Anyway, I discovered a Florida frog, but honestly it is not much different from an Indiana frog. I chased some birds and two squirrels that dared to stand right in front of me and laugh at me.

We moved off the path through some dense trees down to the edge of small lake to take a look at the water. It was full of vegetation and we couldn’t see the bottom. The Professor and I sat down at the edge of the water and began to chat. I just listened to him, as always, I respond by cocking my head when he says something interesting. At the same time, we noticed a floating log about 6 feet long that was a couple of yards out into the water. I didn’t think much about it until an eye opened up on the log. We both jumped back as it started moving away from us. What kind of log is this? I asked as I barked at the Professor. The Professor called it an alligator. I don’t care what it was called, I wanted no part of it. We strategically retreated to the walking path. As we walked back, the Professor said he was upset that he had forgotten to bring his phone to take a picture. I could care less about taking a picture of that log with an open eye. The Professor laughed at one of the signs warning walkers and joggers about the alligators in the ponds. I want no part of this alligator thing. Finally, back in the safety of Casa Staten Tallahassee, I collapsed on the cool floor, went to sleep, and dreamed of being a brave beagle.
